    Dear Students: While pageout shows me, the instructor, your final grade, it does not allow you, the student, to see this grade. Thus you will have to see your final grade as it is posted on Owl Express. Please do check your grades one last time in pageout and contact me if you have any concerns.     REMINDER: extra credit assignments (1 page review of on-line art exhibition) are at be submitted to me via email at jjstep2@emory.edu. I will accept them until 6:30pm on December 4th. Those students who have already submitted them should find test #2 scores increased by 1/2 grade point.

    Reminder: This Wednesday, September 20, proceed DIRECTLY to the Stillwell Theater for the Atlanta Percussion Trio performance at 6:30pm. PLEASE DO NOT BE LATE!. Turn in a one page paper the following Wednesday, September 27. The analysis should focus on ONE piece of music and follow the same format as the art analysis (description, identification of dominant formal element, interpretation). You may want to print out the Art Group Worksheet and adapt it for this assignment.

Use the worksheet to determine the dominant visual and design elements for the work you have chosen to write about. Fill in the art anlysis (group discussion) worksheet to help you interpret yoru emotional and intellectual response to those dominant visual elements. Turn that worksheet into a one page paper. Remember to include your name, the title of the art work you are writing about, the the name of the exhibition where you saw it. Have fun. Do grammer and spell check.

    Students: Remember to turn in your non-object assignment on Monday September 11. If you choose to make a 3-d object please give it to me in a bag so i can carry it. Please keep weight and overall size on the small side. Jessica Stephenson ART 1107: Arts in Society 1. Create a nonrepresentational drawing using only line, shape, and color to represent the expressive qualities for 1 of the following adjectives. You should choose an adjective that has an emotional connection for you. alienation/ loneliness fear passion anger exuberance sorrow peaceful jealousy Remember not to use symbols or realistic images. Experiment with any media available to you and your group, as well as line direction, line thickness, geometric vs. organic shapes, and negative space to maximize the emotional impact.

    Greetings 1107/02 students Please note on your calendars that the first event report (the art analysis) is due in Week 5 on Monday September 18. We will fill out an analysis report in class during Week 4 on Monday September 11 and discuss the event report assignment itself.     Course Description
    Through an examination of the role of arts in society, and an in depth study of the visual works of arts, this interactive course provides an understanding of the creative process and develops skills in creativity and critical analysis. Heightened perceptual abilities will be developed through class experiences and field visits to a variety of art events in dance, music and theater as well as in the visual arts. Class discussions and projects, videotapes, and field trips will supplement slide lectures. Required attendance at most events requires paid admission. Each student must purchase tickets at the beginning of the semester to assure availability.
